Dear Friends, Family, and Distinguished Individuals,

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and good night, wherever you are reading this message. My name is Charlie Mazzeo, and I have been a member of Thousand Waves Martial Arts and Self-Defense Center for nearly 10 years.

I cannot imagine my life without Thousand Waves. It has provided me with purpose when I couldn't find any. With sympathy, when none was around. With friends, when everyone else turned away. That hope that Thousand Waves provides to anyone with an affiliation with the organization, is why I once again ask you to help us continue helping people feel hope.

Our Spirit Challenge Fundraiser supports Thousand Waves' not-for-profit work in three critical areas:

  • The Scholarship Program, which provides funding for children and adults who wouldn't otherwise be able to study karate or self-defense.

I have met some of my closest friends through karate, people who have made my life much better. These people have helped me grow into a stronger and happier person. I would not have been able to meet these people without our scholarship program.

  • Adapted Seido Karate (ASK) program, which provides karate instruction for youth with disabilities.

ASK is a program that provides training in self-defense, but it also provides an opportunity for growth for people who are often overlooked. It allows the ability to stand up and say, "I am as good as anybody else." To teach that nothing makes them any less deserving of respect than anyone else. I have been a volunteer instructor for ASK for over a year and I have been inspired by the dedication and heart of the students.

  • Self-Defense/Violence Prevention program, which provides Self-defense and Bystander Intervention workshops and courses all over the city.

Thousand Waves was named based on the Japanese saying, "One wave sets thousands in motion." Your help can let us help others, and they will, in turn, help others. Truly, you are helping to make a difference in the dangerous and turbulent world we live in today. Thank you for helping us make waves.

Thank you for your support.
