Dear friends,
Many of you know I had a heart transplant last year. I am still healing. And I am in it for the long haul, still dealing with secondary effects of the anti-rejection drugs and other health issues. Since my first cardiac episode my karate training has been the main source of strength and patience when dealing with obstacles I had never expected. Jeff, Lucía, and Ana have also used their share of strength and patience supporting me and keeping their lives together when falling apart would have been understandable. But Thousand Waves and Seido Karate have taught us to strive with patience. I was able to return to karate last fall and even participated in the board breaking seminar in October. The main cardiologist in Christ Hospital has a photo of me breaking a board in his office.
I want others to have access to the amazing source of strength that training at Thousand Waves has given us.
Thousand Waves is a mission-driven not-for-profit in the city of Chicago that has been active in the community for over 33 years fostering fitness, healing, empowerment, and peacemaking.
Our Spirit Challenge Fundraiser supports Thousand Waves' work in three critical areas:
- Scholarship program, which provides funding for children and adults who wouldn't otherwise be able to study karate or self-defense.
- Adapted Seido Karate program (ASK), which provides karate for youth with disabilities.
- Self-Defense/Violence Prevention program, which provides Self-defense and Bystander Intervention workshops and courses all over the city.
Thousand Waves was named based on the Japanese saying, "One wave sets thousands in motion." Thank you for helping us make waves!
