Even though I have not been able to train as much as usual since leaving for college, this break has made me realize how useful the non-physical skills taught at Thousand Waves are. From finding self-motivation through non-quitting spirit, to defining my own boundaries, to being a safe resource to others, it is no exaggeration to say that Thousand Waves has given me the skills to navigate the dojo and beyond.
Additionally, when I have come home for breaks, I am always reminded of how much of a family the Thousand Waves community is: even after long stretches of absence being welcomed back with open arms is a privilege and gift I am so lucky to have in my life. As I return to the dojo for the summer, I want to make sure more karate students have the opportunity that I have to experience that community—that is why, despite being at college, I am still committed to fundraising to support this fantastic community.
